Our History
Ackley Building Center in Brush has a history of success that dates back
nearly sixty years. William (Bill) Ackley lived in Snyder, Colorado, and shortly after
the end of World War II, in 1946, began to buy building materials in Denver and
bringing them out to Brush for resale to the public. In 1949, Bill and his family moved to Brush, and he opened a small retail business on Mill Street, named “Ackley Builders Supply.” Bill Ackley was formally in business as a lumber and hardware dealer.
Bill operated the business, usually with only one other employee, and the business began to flourish. A new concrete block building was erected at 1402 Mill Street in the 1960’s and in 1979, when Bill was 82 years old; he sold the business to Dale and Marilyn Stinton, his son-in-law and daughter.
Dale and Marilyn renamed the business Ackley Building Center and operated it until 1990. Under the Stinton’s ownership, the business continued to grow. In 1983, a 3000 square foot retail showroom was built, allowing for the expansion of the products offered at Ackley Building Center.
Dale and Marilyn sold the business to Marc and Cindy Tormohlen in 1990. Marc had been employed by the Stinton’s, working at Ackley Building Center since 1981. Marc’s background in construction and his knowledge and experience in the building industry has proved very valuable to Ackley Building Center’s continued success under the Tormohlen’s ownership. Cindy was a teacher at the time of their purchase of Ackley Building Center, and she still is, to this day, a high school math teacher in Fort Morgan.
Since the Tormohlen’s purchase, many additions and improvements have been made. The retail building space has had major additions two different times, making the current retail showroom an 8000 square foot area, showcasing the many items we offer. A 9000 square foot lumber storage building was erected in 1999, allowing storage of most all the lumber to be under cover. Other buildings have been built, providing covered storage for virtually all the products we sell.
We are proud owners of Ackley Building Center and have worked hard to make Ackley Building Center a thriving business with a strong presence in the community of Brush and Morgan county. We appreciate the loyalty of our customers and thank you for our success. We look forward to serving you now and in the years to come.
